Technology-based Solutions

Better Health Worldwide uses technologies to capture patient compliance, quality of life (QOL), and patient diary data. We use two way text messaging for patient engagements and data collection as well as more traditional Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems for both inbound (patients calls into the system) and outbound (the system calls the patient) patient contact. Given the typical large number of patients and the ongoing nature of most patient compliance, quality of life (QOL), and patient diary data collection projects, these technologies are ideally situated to capture data in a time and cost-effective manner.

Two-way patient text-messaging (TWTM) engagements

Two-way text messaging (TWTM) provides an interactive real-time data collection solution. As of October 2014 64% of American adults own a smartphone, and over 90% of American adults owned a cell phone capable of text-based data collection. Our partner, Engaged Media, holds a patent for TWTM in healthcare. Because we use familiar technologies already possessed by most American Adults, start-up costs are low, and response rates are high. Our system uses a double-opt-in procedure and is HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) compliant.

Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems

Older subjects not comfortable with text messaging often are more comfortable with other technologies through their personal or any public phone. An IVR system also has the advantage of confidentiality.

Furthermore, given the diversity of patients, an IVR system also has the advantage of ease of translation. The same program can be used to ask questions in a variety of languages, with data being stored in a common database.

Benefits of our technology-based Solutions

Two-way text messaging (TWTM) and Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems have several advantages:

  • Patients are much more likely to give a candid response to an IVR system compared to a human interviewer on any issue related to treatment compliance, sex, drug use, or satisfaction with a caregiver.
  • Because the data are entered directly, they are not subject to handwriting interpretation and the data are available rapidly.
  • The systems can be used to alert:
    • Medical professionals (via pager or fax) when patients who respond to certain red-flag questions (e.g. "YES" to "Are you feeling suicidal?")
    • Patients to remember to comply with their therapy

Overall, these systems are straightforward to develop and require little intervention once running. We provide and house the systems as turn-key solutions, with all computer hardware and phone lines coming into our offices, and where we could take care of any problems immediately on a 24/7/365 basis.
